SMKA shines a light on solar energy

As part of Al Naboodah Group Enterprises, we are proud to be contributing to the Group’s sustainability strategy and to participate in shaping our region. In providing intelligent and resource-efficient lighting systems and electrical devices, we help you consume less energy as we work towards a more sustainable future.

But what does a more sustainable future look like?

Solar Energy in the spotlight

Increasing attention for renewable energy sources and efforts to reduce power consumption means that current projections see the global market for solar energy growing significantly.

In the Emirates, the focus on solar energy has been accelerated in part by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s Shams Dubai initiative, which encourages property owners to install photovoltaic (PV) panels on their buildings. The electricity generated is then used to power the building locally with the surplus power exported to DEWA’s network.

The initiative was developed to help realise the dream of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to make Dubai the world’s smartest and happiest city. The Smart Dubai initiative addresses six key areas: smart life, smart transportation, smart society, smart economy, smart governance and smart environment.

This vision is further supported by the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, set to increase the share of clean energy in Dubai’s total power output to 7% by 2020, 25% by 2030, and 75% by 2050.

Solar Energy powering the spotlight

In conjunction with this recent change of attitude there are many other factors which led SMKA to forecast a bright future for solar energy solutions. Technological advances in solar power production – such as an increase in solar PV panel efficiency and shrinking panel sizes – is coupled with greater cost-effectiveness of installation and maintenance, subsequently reducing the per-unit cost of power generation. Such development is slowly but surely positioning solar power as cost-competitive against power generated from fossil fuels.

Furthermore, the increased efficiency and decreasing manufacturing costs of LED lighting, as well as the wealth of other benefits they bring, has caused a major spurt in their popularity. Together with solar energy solutions, the environmental impact of LED lighting can be incredible. Since the introduction of solar powered lighting on traffic diversions and tower lights, Al Naboodah Group Enterprises has seen a 44% reduction in their energy use this year, massively surpassing the 3.5-5% reduction target.
